Montignac-sur-Vézère is located in the Vézère Valley, an area that has traces of uninterrupted human settlement dating back to prehistory and whose prehistoric sites and decorated caves are registered as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Opposite the famous decorated Lascaux Cave, the medieval village of Montignac-sur-Vézère developed under the protection of the castle and its fortifications.
